I can only say…
95,110 words, the last two are THE and END.
Is it perfect? No. But it has some good stuff in it, i think. I’m going to quickly and obsessively look over the scenes (throw a good ten or twelve of them away probably) for a day or two and then send the whole mess to initial readers.
Valerie, E.J., thanks for the motivation! You don’t get the $10 each, but E.J. gets Charles Darwin and Valerie gets an Asian guy with an afro!

Thank you all. It’s been a hard process, i couldn’t have done it without you.
Check in tomorrow for a novelburns update. New exciting surprises coming!

Like the climactic final scene in the action thriller, i have to satisfactorily end my novel and write at least 3000 words doing it.
Wait.
Which action thriller is that?
I mean it’s like a show down between me and Valerie and E.J. I have my laptop and they have … wait … where is this metaphor going?
I need to hit 95,000 words and THE END. Otherwise, i owe them each $10.
[Imagine that whistling music from "The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly"]
Let’s see what happens…

SO. CLOSE.
I’m literally at the end of the climactic scene, which is, oddly enough, really hard to write. I actually only managed to meet my wordcount by going back and padding out some earlier scenes. Ah well.
But i did it. Thanks for playing, J Peters, but the ten dollars stays home.
But you get … a giant eyeball!:

Tomorrow, i HAVE to finish the end. No excuses.

I’m a little worried about today.
Sure, the end is in sight, but i think the climactic scene could likely be the hardest in the book to write and i have a bunch of meetings today and will be running around a lot.
Whine. Whine. Whine.
So, note to self: Rewriting a novel in 25 days … is hard.
So here’s the plan, fit in writing in little dribs and drabs when i get time, use tomorrow to pad out any scenes that are too spare, and then maybe go over the whole thing to look for anything too blatantly stupid.
Then i ship this off to the initial readers. Whew.
More importantly, THEN i shave off the novelburns. Pictures to follow.

For those new to the site, this will make much more sense if you read this first.
Hey all,
Been gone the last few days, so i need to catch you all up!
To start with, here’s a picture of me presenting Diana with her ten dollar reward.
Thrilling!
Ferrett, because he rocks, donated $20 in my name to GLADD. (This was especially nice since the &%$#@!^* had threatened, in the comments, to donate my $10 to the Prop-8 people if i lost.)
Let’s recap the last few days.
Misa Arant, you get a starfish. Jerry, you get an old fashioned pinball machine!

I have a secret …
Ready?
… i’m one scene away from finishing the novel. (!!!!?!!) Maybe a little denouement after that, but that’s it.
Whew.
I guess to honor the contest, i’ll have to go back and find stuff that needs more description or see if there’s a missing scene. We’ll see.
Ugh. Haven’t been exercising at all lately. Hoping to pick it back up in the next few days.

Hey all,
I’m on track, but i’ll be mostly away from internets for a day or two… but will still be writing!
I’ll catch you all up Thursday or Friday.
Rawk,
Grá

Misa Arant and Jerry, i didn’t forget you. But i’m just starting now on the last 2800 words of the day, so we’ll see.
Whew.

Yeah. Another burned-out day. Though honestly, i feel pretty proud. I wrote 2000 words that were pretty good. I’ll pick up the extra tomorrow.
Look for a picture tomorrow.

Next up: Oh snap! Misa Arant and Jerry Oltion
Crap, another DOUBLE PAYOUT DAY! I have to make up my lost wordcount and get to 80,000 words, or i have to pay BOTH of them $10. The deadly $20 day comes!

So, yeah. Going to bed.

I was going to give up yesterday, i really was. I was tired, unmotivated, lonely and kinda blue.
I got home from the volunteer gig, thinking about going to bed, and what do i find? A note from The Ferrett. He said if i didn’t win he’d donate the ten bucks to Prop 8.
So i worked on the stupid thing till 4am. I’m pretty sure i wrote more than 5000 words last night, but i had to throw thousands away and the rules to the contest say i have to increase the total wordcount by 3000 every day. Anyway, i passed 74,000 words. Yay me.
Anyway, thanks for the boost, Ferrett.
You get peeps:

Today’s contender is my awesome housemate, Diana Standish. She certainly has opportunity to trip me up today and steal my $10, but i also know where she sleeps, so…

There are no funny or witty words at 3:45 in the morning.
I just made my wordcount: 74,034 words. I’ll send out a more proper update after some sleep.
Night all.

As of 10:53pm, i’m 2,490 words short of my goal. Digging in now.
I’ll either send a final update when i hit 74,000 words, or when i give up and let Ferrett do his nefarious worst.
Here we go…

I have to get to 74,000 words by the time i go to bed, or i owe Ferrett ten bucks, which he will no doubt spend on exotic liqueurs.
I haven’t started writing yet and today’s scenes are looking particularly hard, so, uh, we’ll see…

I think i’m starting to go into the exhilarating and scary part of the novel where everything seems downhill from here.
On my break day, i plotted out all the scenes left (as far as i can tell) and i’ve come up with 25 scenes, probably a little bit less than 1000 words each. Which more or less fits what i planned. Breaking it down like that makes it seem less intimidating. Three or so scenes a day, i can do that.
Anyway, i wrote through four scenes and got my 3000 words. Thanks for playing, Rachel A, but the ten dollars stays home.
As a consolation prize, please accept the Greek Earth-Mother, Demeter!:

What evil does the Ferrett have in store to steal my $10? Tune in to find out! I have to get to 74,000 words before i go to bed tomorrow or i owe Ferrett ten bucks.

My first not-so-bad day in awhile. Last night i outlined all the remaining scenes in the book, which helped me get my head around what to write today.
Sorry, Kevin, the ten dollars stays home.
As a consolation prize, i offer the best guitar ever:

I have to get to 68,000 words by the time i go to bed tonight, or i owe Kevin ten bucks.
Kevin, like Dave, threatens to line my writing day with traps and pitfalls.
We’ll see, Kevin Kenan, we’ll. see.

Dave made a valiant effort.
At 10:40am, he sent me a link to War & Peace, suggesting that i might like to spend the day reading.
At 1:10pm, he detailed all the things he would do with his $10, donations to despicable causes.
At 4:10pm, he sent me a study outlining the health problems associated with lack of sleep. A nap, he suggested, was in order.
It was a good try, Dave, but i am happy to report my $10 is saved.
Instead, you get a plethora of muppets!

Novel Excerpt:
———————————–
They sat around a butcher block table in a white kitchen lit with warm light. He’d offered coffee but Amp had waved it off. “We really have to get out of here soon.”
Mr. Winters looked out the window. “I think we all may.”
The kitchen was bright, feminine, whoever had designed it had hand-drawn vines as trim along the ceiling. Mr. Winters caught Ras looking at it and said, “Mrs. Winters decorated herself.” His face fell. “She passed through the veil a year ago.”
Ras looked down. “I’m sorry.”
He appeared vulnerable and old for a moment, then he straightened his back, his face fell into the enigmatic mask he’d held in the church. “We’ll all pass through the veil. I look forward to becoming an elder.”

Still there, still itchy. I’ll probably dye them sometime in the next few days. Pictures to follow.
Did some DDR and a few pushups and situps, but not as much as i’d like.
Bed!

Dave is a tricky one. Already he’s tried to distract me from my goal.
What else does he have in store? Who knows? he’s well aware that i have to get to 65,000 words today or he gets $10.
It’s a battle to the … well, ten dollars.
